From the Pastor's Desk
In joy and in sorrow.
No, I’m not thinking about wedding vows, I’m thinking about life. This is a description of what we all do in our life. There are times of great joy, and there are times of great sorrow. When we are experiencing those times of joy it seems like they don’t last long enough. And when we are in those times of sorrow it seems like they’ll never end.
But the most powerful truth that accompanies this observation: Jesus is with us through it all. He promises never to leave nor forsake us. He promises life to the full, no matter the circumstances. Thus, I plan to begin the year with a sermon series on the life of Christ. I want to take us all on a journey through the three-year ministry of Jesus on earth as recorded in the Four Gospels. As we explore His servant life and ministry, we will gain a deeper insight into who He was as a man. The theme verse for the series is Hebrews 12:2, “…Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith…” If we are to abide in Jesus in 2019, then we need to get to know Him better this year than we knew Him in 2018.
Our problem is that more often than not we want ease instead of perseverance, pleasure instead of discipline, surface instead of depth. We tend to want the easy way out instead of the way of the Lord Jesus, the way of the cross. Hebrews Twelve also says, “All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.” This is the abundant life, this is the fullness that Jesus promised. Because He also said, “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
As we launch into 2019, know for certain that there will be times of joy, and times of sorrow. But as we fix our eyes on Jesus, as we walk with Him day-by-day, moment-by-moment, He will be with us to see us through and bring forth the peaceful fruit of righteousness. This is true for each of our lives individually, this is true for us as a church Body. Let us embrace everything God has for us in the coming year, both the joy and the sorrow. And let us fix our eyes on Jesus!
