The United States of America.
Throughout its history, the US has experienced crises that threatened our very existence. The Revolutionary War, by all human accounting, should have ended in a British victory…but it didn’t. The War of 1812 should have seen the British reverse their defeat from our war of independence…but it didn’t. The Civil War could easily have ended this ‘experiment in democracy’…but it didn’t. And just one more: in World War II, the Axis alliance was poised to bring the world under its control, including the United States…but it didn’t.
In pride, we espoused doctrines like manifest destiny and American exceptionalism as ways to try to take credit for our seemingly miraculous survival. But in fact, the only reasonable explanation for the survival of this great country of ours is the providence of God. As Proverbs 21:31 says, “The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but victory belongs to the Lord.” God’s grace has been looking out for us these two-hundred-forty-two years (and counting).
I say all this because as a nation we are, right now, at a remarkable, unique, scary place in our history. Will we continue as a bastion of freedom and liberty (the afore mentioned experiment in democracy)? Or will the electorate finally cede their authority to govern to a political establishment bent on identity politics and self-perpetuation?
Since God has shown His hand in support of the US in the past, then it is for God’s people to pray. Did God save us from England because His people prayed? I don’t know. Did God save us from ourselves in the 1860’s because God’s people prayed? I don’t know. But I do know this, that during World War II, when my father found himself more than once in the middle of horrific naval battles in the Pacific Theater where his was the only Allied ship in the flotilla that wasn’t in flames from enemy bombardment, that my Grandmother Olive and Grandfather Vern and their church prayed earnestly for my Dad.
Are you concerned for our country, wondering what the future holds? Then it is for us to pray! Pray for our nation, for God’s sovereign and gracious hand to protect. Pray for revival! That a mighty move of His Spirit would begin among His people to move us to pray, to love and to proclaim the Good News. Pray for our leaders on both sides of the aisle; for their salvation and that they would govern with a view to insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.
Yours for making disciples of every nation (including the US),
